Dr.Darshanaben H Vekariya
The ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department in Shalakya Tantra, one of the eight branches of Ayurveda, focuses on diseases above the clavicle, including the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head, and oral cavity. Shalakya deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disorders using both medical and surgical methods, including specialized instruments (Shalaka), hence the name. This branch emphasizes the use of herbal formulations, nasya (nasal therapy), dhoomapana (medicated smoke), karnapoorana (ear therapies), netra tarpana (eye rejuvenation), and kriya kalpas (local applications) for treating ENT conditions. It also addresses modern-day issues like sinusitis, conjunctivitis, hearing loss, tinnitus, tonsillitis, and migraine. The ancient texts like Sushruta Samhita detail advanced surgical techniques like cataract surgery and rhinoplasty, showcasing the depth of Shalakya knowledge. The ENT segment of Shalakya Tantra not only treats physical disorders but also supports mental and sensory health, aiming at holistic healing and prevention through natural methods, lifestyle corrections, and detoxification therapies.

The Eye Department in Shalakya Tantra is a specialized branch of Ayurveda that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of eye disorders. It is one of the most detailed areas of Shalakya, focusing on the structure, function, and diseases of the eyes. Ancient texts like the Sushruta Samhita describe the anatomy of the eye, mentioning six layers (patalas) and various delicate parts. Shalakya Tantra identifies 76 types of eye diseases, affecting different parts such as eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, sclera, and lens. Treatments include internal herbal medicines and external therapies like Netra Tarpana (nourishing the eyes with medicated ghee), Aschyotana (eye drops), Anjana (medicated collyrium), and Putapaka (herbal decoctions). Surgical procedures for cataract and pterygium are also described. Preventive care through daily routines, eye exercises, proper diet, and lifestyle is emphasized. The department aims to preserve vision, restore clarity, and promote overall eye health using holistic and natural Ayurvedic principles.
